Temporary Solutions for Fixing Leaky Pipes - Advice from a Brampton Plumber

Temporary Solutions for Fixing Leaky Pipes - Advice from a Brampton Plumber

Without due diligence, leaking pipes can result in extreme damage for homeowners. Creating a temporary solution until a professional plumber arrives is the best route of choice. But if you want to try to repair the pipe yourself so it’s up to standards, you can easily use a slip coupling. No matter the choice, or type of temporary repair, you need to ensure that the pipe is dry by turning off the water supply while you’re getting your hands dirty!

  1. Shutting off your water supply. If you have an invisible leak or multiple leaks, the best route of action is to locate the central water supply. This is usually located in your basement or some hard to get to crawl space. It’ll have a dial/valve that you will be able to turn counter clock wise. This will help from preventing further damage, or pipes from bursting. But if the leak is only in a drain pipe, it’ll be unneccisary to turn off the water supply.Turn on the leaky faucet that is conjoined to the pipe allow them to drain the excess water. This was alow the water to run until the pipe is completely dry.
  2. Apply Plumbers Epoxy. Plumbers Expoxy can be found at your local hardware tool. It is a great malleable tool that works like clay; moulding to whatever it is pressed up against. It’s advised that you use gloves (latex or nitrle) before using because it will heat up which may cause rashes or pain. You can begin using it by playing with the putty until it has a light grey color. After it’s kneeded, you’re going to want to wrap the putty around the leak, and push it through the cracks. Finish it off by taping the edges of it with its pipes, to create a tight seal. It will take a few minutes to harden (5-20 miutes) so be sure not to turn the wanter on it till it’s finished settling.
  3. Clamping pipe. Purchasing a pipe clamp that’s the exact same size as the pipe that is leaking. Pipe clamps use rubber gaskets which make a seal around the leak of your pipe. You can purchase these at your local hardware store. Ensure that the size is made to fit so that it will fully stop the leak when it’s clamped onto the pipe. Your first step is to make sure the rubber gasket is lind up with the leak on the pipe. This rubber gasket should be on the top and around the leak so the water is completely sealed off. Wrap the clamp around the gasket and ensure that the bolts are tightened and fitted. Please note that clamps are a temporary solution and that the pipe will either need to be replaced or fixed by a professional plumber.
  4. Couplings.  Slip couplings are tiny and tight connects that have the ability to connect 2 pipes together. Ensure that the coupling is the same diameter as the pipe that needs repairing. They work well for PVC and copper pipes.
